Weekly Takeaway: It Takes A Village

This week I covered for three days while the lead teacher I work with was out for professional development. My biggest takeaway was that one person cannot do it on their own. I am beyond grateful for all the support I had this week as well as everyone’s faith in me. It feels good to know people can feel confident leaving me with a classroom. I feel confident doing it but it is meaningful to know other people see it and share those thoughts.

There was a lot I learned this week about effective classroom management. There were skills I was able to hone really well. The week had two very different classes. One where I was in my comfort zone and it was a much easier ride. The other felt like a wild upside down roller coaster. As much as I got headaches from them and felt my frustration start to get the best of me at times, it was the more exciting section to teach. They pushed me and I pushed back.

At the end of the day, everything she left got done. One section had more time for extra stories or iPad time than the other but both groups of kids completed the work they needed to. Learning happened and they really loved the activities once they got over their whining. After three days, it isn’t impossible to say I might consider working in third grade.
