Phonics, Word Ladders, Oh My!
Eventually this site will have more than just phonics, reading and writing subject posts. Eventually. Until I am finished with this semester and my internship I think I will be eating, breathing and sleeping literacy. I started planning out phonics for one of the groups in the third grade I am working in as part of my internship. As someone who always did better with words I love word ladder puzzles.
Word Ladder
The group I am planning for is working on the basic skills still to reinforce some gaps so I have many opportunities to play with the idea of a word ladder. I am excited to see how the kiddos do with it. Integrating vocabulary, phonemic awareness skills and spelling pattern awareness the word ladder should reach many skills at once. An adapted sheet has illustrations also so kids who need the visual can have an extra scaffold. I made the decision to leave out just the sound that will change but if this is successful I would be curious how kids who do not need the support would do with a word ladder style worksheet.
Exit Tickets
In the classroom I work in now exit tickets have become a big part of our phonics time. For the middle and higher groups worksheets are used more. My goal in working on their plans this semester is creating exit tickets that review old concept but also target new skills. Today the kids who did it rocked it. I am glad to see they are really understanding the concept and remembered what they did before vacation. Download the PDF for the exit ticket here: This Lesson Brought to You By…
